Out and About: UF Campus

–by Justin Sosa Varela

Every day I go outside to walk and see new places at UF. There are beautiful places here, like Lake Alice. Walking around UF, I have also seen many stadiums of different sports that I have never seen before. It is amazing when I visit UF jogging or walking because I can see everything and pay more attention to the different parts, or if there are educational signs I stop to read.

I recently learned about another fun place on campus from my listening and speaking class with Matt Goode. He told to us about the Florida Museum of Natural History-Exhibits. That was an amazing experience because it was free with my Gator ID, and also the museum was amazing.

Notes from the Office

Free COVID tests:

If you are in Gainesville and would like to get a COVID-19 test, you can do the online screening again and choose the option to schedule a test. Log into ONE.uf.edu with your GatorLink username and password and look for the “UF Health COVID-19 Screening” tile to complete a new screening questionnaire. Please email Victoria at vcshelly@ufl.edu if you have any questions!

Your I-20:

Make sure your I-20 does not expire on December 16th if you will study at the ELI after this Fall semester. Contact Daryl if you need to extend your I-20. Also, if you are traveling to the United States with your ELI I-20, make sure Daryl signed the travel authorization on page 2.

Financial guarantee:

Dear scholarship students, we hope to see you again in the Spring! Therefore, we have sent you an early reminder to request your new financial guarantee letter for the Spring semester if you plan to return. Almost all of you have financial guarantees that expire by December 11th, 2020, which means that you will need to submit a new letter by the tuition deadline of January 20th for the Spring C semester to avoid owing a late fee or missing classes. If you have any questions, please email Jennifer Vann at jvann@eli.ufl.edu.

Conversation Partners:

We still have volunteers waiting to be paired! Do you want a second partner? Or maybe a third? Get paired today by emailing conversationpartners@eli.ufl.edu.

Grammar

Q: What are the differences in to me and for me?

A: Let’s look at some sentences using to me and for me and look at the differences in meaning.

  1. Mary is good to me.
  2. Mary is good for me.

Both sentences are correct but with different meanings. In the 1st sentence, Mary’s behavior is kind towards me. In the 2nd sentence, Mary provides a benefit, but not related to her behavior. With this level of meaning, we would say:

  • Medicine is good for me. (Medicine has benefits.)

but not:

  • Medicine is good to me. (Medicine doesn’t have behavior.)

Here is another slightly different meaning.

  1. It is important to me to study at the University of Florida.
  2. It is important for me to study at the University of Florida.

In the 1st sentence, to me shows that I personally feel the importance. In the 2nd sentence, for me suggests that I do not feel the importance (someone else does). If we change the sentences slightly, the meaning is easier to see:

  • My teacher thinks it is important to me to study at the University of Florida. (The teacher thinks that I value studying at UF.)
  • My teacher thinks it is important for me to study at the University of Florida. (The teacher thinks it is important that I study at UF, but my opinion is not there.)
