Out and About: A Work Song From Korea
by Jiho Lee, RW51
If someone asks you about Korea, what is the first thing that pops into your head? You might think of Korean foods, cosmetics, or dramas. As a Korean, the first thing comes to mind is our music. There is a saying that special blood is flowing in Korean bodies because we extremely love music. We listen to music a lot, especially when we have to do something that we don’t want to do, like a spring cleaning. It is called a work song which is a custom handed down to us from old times.
In the past, most Koreans were farmers or fishermen who worked very hard. People needed something to help them to enjoy their work, and music was the solution. During work, they sang songs together, and after work, they gathered around and watched performances outside. This is called the music for ordinary person because only poor people performed and saw it.
The performers wear Hanbok, which is the national costume of Korea, and special hats with ribbons. They normally play percussion instruments like a drum and Kkwaenggwari, which is made of iron. Also, performers dance to the exciting rhythm. Furthermore, they do an acrobatic movement, so I wonder what they can’t do.
You can see traditional performances in many cities in Korea. Most of them are free or very cheap, but the performances are priceless.

Notes from the Office
Time Change: Daylight Savings Time in the US ends on November 7, 2021. That means we should all set the clocks back one hour. For example, on Sunday at 2:00am, you would change the clock to 1:00am. Most US cell phones will do the change automatically. Remember to check other clocks in your house.
Out of the Office: Victoria will be out of the office on November 5th. Daryl will be out of the office from November 8th-10th. Plan around these dates if you need to talk to them.
Check your Gatormail: Every student has an official UF email account. This is the email that UF, the ELI, Canvas, and your teachers use to send you important mail. You should check your Gatormail every day at https://mail.ufl.edu. If you need help logging in, talk to Victoria.
Student Voices: We love to see our students writing published! Every semester, we take your writing and publish it in Student Voices. Past submissions have included paragraphs, essays, creative stories, recipes, letters, obituaries, poetry, creative stories, class projects, and other interesting works on a variety of topics. I encourage you to submit anything of your work that you wish to see published. It can be from any class or something you have written on your own but ask your teachers for help editing! You can email it to Olga (omoody@ufl.edu) or to your teacher. Please include your name and class on your submission. The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 19th.
