Gilchrist Blue Springs

Join us on Saturday!

Saturday, June 1st – Gilchrist Blue Springs – 8:30am – 1:30pm

Experience the crystal blue waters of the springs! Cool off and go for a swim in the cold water or go for a nature walk in this in one of Florida’s most famous natural environments.  Meet at Norman Parking Garage.  It is peak season for the springs so please be on time so that the park does not hit capacity before we get there. Make sure to pack some snacks or a lunch, bring a bathing suit, towel, and sunscreen.  Bring extra money if you want to rent a kayak.

You must sign up to attend this activity: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C4BA9A823A02-49802440-gilchrist

Notes from the Office

Class Attendance: Your attendance is very, very important.  Your teachers are taking note of both your absences and your tardies in every class every day.  Please remember that this also includes time spent in the hallway instead of the classroom.

Hallways:  Many UF faculty and staff have offices with doors in hallways on campus. So, please do not use the hallways as a gathering point.  Spend your time between classes outside the building.  If you are in the hallway entering or leaving class, please remember to speak softly so we do not disturb other classes or people trying to work.  Please do not block the hallways or staircases by sitting in them.

Scam Alert

The ELI has learned that an international student in Gainesville was almost a victim of fraud. Fraud is lying to or deceiving someone to get money or other things from them. Someone called the student and lied. They said they worked for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and told the student they had to make payments to maintain status. The liar had phone numbers and other information that looked real. The student was scared and almost sent the liar money. This is a scam.

Lawful ICE officers will never offer immigration services in exchange for pre-paid cash cards or services like Western Union and MoneyGram. In fact, ICE officers will never ask for a payment of any kind.  Report any fraudulent schemes to the ELI administration or you can report it to the anonymous ICE tip line: 1-266-347-2423. Never send money to someone you do not know!

If you ever get a text or call and you aren’t sure if it is a scam, come talk to Christine for help.

Student Corner

ELI Student Clefton Simon has a new feature for us, called, “Where I’m From.”  It’s going to be a different ELI-represented country each week.  This week, it’s Angola.

Capital: Luanda

Population: ≤ 37,600,000

Fun fact: Almost 700,000 people in Angola have the same last name: Manuel

Three things to know:

The internationally famous dance known kizomba originated in Angola.

Angola is one of the six (6) countries in Africa where Portuguese is the official language.

Angola has the best men basketball team in Africa. They have won the continent tournament (Afro Basket) 11 times (record).

Manners and Culture

Q:  Is it OK if I didn’t give a tip to the pizza delivery man despite the fact that I paid the delivery fee?

A:  No.  The delivery fee goes to the company whereas the tip goes to the driver. You should tip at least $2 per pizza to your driver.  For those of you using some of the other delivery services from restaurants these days, it’s customary to give your driver 15%.

Grammar

Q:  I ask, “Are you at the lab?” and my student replies, “Sure.” He means yes, or of course, but it doesn’t really make sense. I’ve had other students make this same mistake.  How do I explain the difference between ‘yes’ and ‘sure’?

A: “Sure” only means “yes” when you’re accepting an invitation or agreeing to or giving an opinion.  It doesn’t mean “yes” when it’s simple factual information.

Quote of the Week
