Reminders from the Office

Charges Due: Every ELI student should log in to ONE.ufl.edu  (opens in new tab) and look at the “Campus Finances (Bursar)” tile to see if they owe any fees to the university. For example, you may need to pay for services you received at the Student Health Care Center or printing in a library. If you have a scholarship, it will not pay these charges.

Expiring I-20s: If your I-20 is expiring and you plan on returning to the ELI in the fall, you must talk to Daryl before the expiration date. It is in section 5 of the I-20.

Apartment Leases: As the semester draws to a close, keep in mind that your lease might be ending soon. In the Summer, many student leases end on July31st. It is important to know the exact date that your apartment lease ends so you can make plans. If you’re not sure when it ends, ask your apartment office.

If you need help finding a place to stay in short-term (like a hotel or AirBNB), someone to take over your lease, or a new apartment, talk to Christine in Matherly 223.

Returning Student SurveyThe ELI need to know your plans for the Fall 2024 term. Will you study at the ELI? Will you go to another school? Will you return home? We want to know your plans so we can prepare for next semester. Also, for students on the F-1 visa, Daryl needs to know your plans so he can take correct action with your I-20.

Please complete the Returning Student Survey in myELI by Friday, July 26. All students must complete the survey. Daryl emailed instructions for completing the survey online.  He will visit the Reading/Writing classes on Wednesday, July 24th, to answer your questions about your enrollment, travel plans, and maintaining student status.

Collecting Food and Apartment Supply Donations: Are you leaving Gainesville or moving out of your apartment soon? If you have any items that you will not keep, don’t throw them in the trash! Bring it to the ELI main office in MAT 223 so we can donate it!

We will accept non-perishable food, hygiene products, kitchenware, and other apartment supplies. You can bring in anything unopened, unexpired, and undamaged (come to the ELI Office to see a list).

We will donate the food to the UF Field and Fork Pantry. Kitchen and apartment supplies will be available for new ELI students in the Fall semester or donated to a local Gainesville charity. If you have any questions, talk to Tatum or Christine.

People out:  Christine will be out of the office July 25 and 26.

Student Corner

This week’s country is Indonesia:

Capital: Jakarta

Population: ≤ 279,500,000

Fun Fact: The Torajan people, a tribe in Indonesia, mummify the bodies of the deceased and care for these preserved bodies as if they were still alive. Death is not considered dead but sick, so the dead are still served food and drink very often.

Three things to know:

  1. Indonesia has the island with the most people in the world. Java is home to more than 150 million people.
  2. Indonesia is the 2nd world’s most multilingual country with more than 700 languages spoken. Only Papua New Guinea has more languages spoken (around 840).
  3. Indonesia is home to Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower. This flower has no stalks, roots, or leaves.

Manners and Culture

Q:  Why don’t people at UF wear a lot of clothes during the winter?

A:  This is something unique to Florida. Florida’s winters are mild, and the periods of really cold weather only last a few days. One reason people may not wear a lot of clothes during Floridian winters is simply because they don’t HAVE any other clothes. They may figure that the cold days will be over soon, so why spend so much money on coats and boots? Still, some people enjoy wearing boots and shorts as a fashion statement.

Grammar

Q:  When do you use “neither” and “either” with a negative verb?

A:   Either is used when you give the negative verb in your answer. Neither is used when you don’t say a verb in your answer and you are agreeing with a negative verb.

Rafael: I don’t like hot weather.

Sasha: I don’t either.

Elizabeth: Me neither.

Q:  When do I use “so do I” and “so am I?”

A:  They both mean that you agree with the person talking but which one you use depends on the verb in the original sentence. Use “so am I” for the be verb. Use “so do I” for all other verbs. Look at the conversations that follow:

Joan: I am tired.

Selena: So am I.

Joan: I want to go to the movies.

Selena: So do I.

Quote of the Week

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.
