Out and About: Gator Football and Tailgating

Last Saturday, you may have noticed the UF campus absolutely packed with Gator fans! What were all these people doing outside all day? They were taking part in tailgating, an American tradition that brings football fans together to share food, drinks, and school spirit on the day of a football game.  Tailgating is part of the college football experience and a hugely popular social activity here at UF.

The term “tailgating” comes from the practice of lowering the back of a truck (called the tailgate) or station wagon and using the tailgate as a table for food and beverages. Tailgating has been an American pastime for over a century. Through time, it has evolved into the elaborate tailgating tradition we know today involving tents, grills, corn hole, music, TVs, and lots and lots of school spirit!

Would you like to tailgate at a Gator football game? If you do, make sure you follow UF guidelines for tailgating, which can be found here: Game Day Tailgating at the University of Florida – UF Business Affairs.

Notes from the Office

Class Attendance: Your attendance is important.  Your teachers are taking note of both your absences and your tardies in every class every day.  Please remember that this also includes time spent in the hallway instead of the classroom.

Lost and Found: Have you lost your car keys, student ID card, driver’s license, wallet, or some other important item? Many times, when people find an item, they bring it to the office for safe keeping. When you lose something, please come by the ELI Main Office (MAT223) and see if it is in the lost and found.

Student Addresses: It is important that the ELI has each student’s address. If you have an F or J visa, you should report a change of address within 10 days of any change. You can update your address in myELI using the ‘Basic Information’ tab in your ‘My Profile’ page. If you need help updating your address in myELI, please contact Daryl at studyenglish@eli.ufl.edu.

UF Email Addresses: Please be sure to regularly check your ufl.edu email address. This is the only address the University of Florida will use to communicate with you.

Deadlines: The deadline to drop or add a class, pay tuition, submit proof of insurance and immunizations, and turn in a signed waiver of liability is Thursday, September 4. If you miss any of these deadlines, you could be removed from classes or charged a late fee!  If you have questions about paying tuition or submitting a financial guarantee, email at fiscal@eli.ufl.edu.  If you have questions about insurance or immunizations, email Christine Voigt at christinevoigt@ufl.edu.

Withdrawing: Students who withdraw from a course or from the ELI after the drop/add deadline (Thursday, September 4th) will not be able to receive a refund or credit for their courses. Their transcript will have a grade of W (withdraw).

Grammar

Q: It’s so hot in Gainesville! When does the weather start to feel more like fall?

A: The transition from summer to fall weather in Gainesville is gradual. Summer weather (hot, humid, frequent afternoon thunderstorms) usually lasts into September. Highs are still in the upper 80s–90s, and humidity is high.

Early fall conditions begin to show up in late September through October, when cold fronts from the north start to push into North Florida. This brings slightly cooler mornings, lower humidity, and less rain.

By mid-to-late October, you’ll notice a clearer shift—average highs drop into the low 80s and 70s, nights are cooler (50s–60s), and the daily thunderstorm pattern fades.

True fall weather (cool, dry, crisp air) is most consistent in November.

Joke of the Week

Q: Do I use “much” or “many” with money?

A: We use the word “much” with things that cannot be counted and “many” with plural count nouns. The word “money” is non-count, so we use “much.” It seems strange to say you can’t count money, but grammatically speaking, it’s true!

Here are some examples:

  • I don’t have much money.
  • How much money is in your bank account?

However, if we are talking about units of money (coins, bills, dollars, etc.) then we will use “many.”

  • How many five-dollar bills do you have in your wallet?
  • She asked me for many coins from my country for her world coin collection.

Joke of the Week

Q: Why can’t the alligator hang out with his buddies today?

A: No time—he’s swamped!
