I love traveling, especially to my home countries, and learning about all the different cultures, identities, and languages that call this planet home! I’m incredibly excited to make so many memories this semester and get to know you! |
![]() | Nicole BecerraHello everyone. My name is Nicole Becerra, and I am studying political science. I was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but my parents are Colombian. Growing up, my parents' English was not the best and I often became the bridge, translating and connecting cultures for my family. My parents are the reason why I became interested in this program and why it is dear to my heart. I consider myself truly fortunate to serve as an LA with the ELI because I cherish the opportunity to meet new individuals, immerse myself in diverse cultures, and, most importantly, create a welcoming space where people can feel at ease as they embark on their journey to master the English language. I hope to encourage open dialogue, embrace the beauty of learning through mistakes, and share lighthearted moments along the way. I'm excited to meet everyone and hope everyone enjoys their time here at UF! |
![]() | Talia BockHi everyone! My name is Talia, and I’m majoring in criminology and costume design at UF. In the future I hope to practice fashion law, in order to help protect the creative identity of small designers around the world. In my free time I love reading, sewing, vintage shopping, or practicing yoga. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and am excited for an amazing semester! |
![]() | Joey ClerveauxConversation Partner Program AssistantHi everyone! My name is Joanna Clerveaux, but you can call me Joey. I'm a recent graduate from the University of Florida with my Bachelors of Arts in Political Science and International Studies with a minor in African American Studies. I’m from Coral Springs, Florida! This is my fifth semester with the English Language Institute, and I also serve as the Conversation Partner Program Assistant. I'm so excited to interact with you all once again and learn more about where everyone is from and what they're all about! I love engaging in cultural exchanges, whether that would be through simple conversations, asking questions, engaging in activities, and more. Since I do want to work in foreign service eventually, I think that this would be the best opportunity to learn more about the world around me, and make others feel welcome and comfortable in America as well. I'm incredibly pleased to meet you all! |

![]() | Shawn KapersaudHey everyone! My name is Shawn Kapersaud and I am a third year international studies major with an area focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. The fall 2024 semester is my first semester here as a language assistant although I participated in the conversation partner program for a few semesters prior. I am super excited to hear the different stories of ELI students that come from around the world to study here! When I am not at the ELI, you can catch me learning other languages, reading a good book, or trying out new spots to eat. As an avid language learner myself, I know some of the struggles of trying to pick up a foreign language or culture. I also know the glow on someone’s face when you speak to them in their native language. These experiences have inspired me to be on the other side of that journey: I can’t wait to help others navigate the English language and American culture. |

![]() | Elijah ZarsadiasHi everyone! My name is Elijah, and I’m a Filo-Rican (Filipino + Puerto Rican) fourth year double-majoring in Linguistics and French and Francophone Studies with a minor in Spanish. I was born in Chicago, IL, but I spent most of my childhood in Orlando, FL. Growing up as a Spanish-English bilingual in big cities, I witnessed first-hand the struggles that the English-learning community frequently faces in their journey towards fluency and how this fluency relates to their sense of cultural authenticity. These experiences, as well as my fascination towards language itself, motivate my research in Language Acquisition and my time with the ELI. I also speak Québec French fluently and am currently learning Brazilian Portuguese. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy rock-climbing, karaoke (go-to song: “Love” by Keyshia Cole), and roller-skating! I’m super excited to get to know everyone! |
