Out and About: Halo Donuts

by Mihyang Kim

“Let’s grab get some donuts and coffee!” When you hear this from your friends, you might be reminded of Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme. If so, you must not know you have another option choice that you can try a unique local donut place in Gainesville, Halo Potato Donuts! Yes, they make donuts with potatoes. The donuts come in over 10 different flavors, and they have special flavors every day, so you can enjoy a variety of donuts. You might be thinking that a donut is not a meal but a snack. However, these donuts are as filling as eating an entire dish at a restaurant. When you take a bite of one of their donuts, the crispy outside of the donut gives way to the soft, delectable delicious inside. They open at 7am and make donuts for the day—when they sell out, they close. If you want to try Halo Donuts, you should go there early in the morning, and you will never regret feel bad about waking up early. Choosing the right donut is like deciding which birthday present to open first. There is no bad decision!

Notes from the Office

Part-time Students:

You must sign up for a test with Patricia Moon (patti@ufl.edu) by December 2nd if you are a part-time ELI student not taking a core class (Grammar, Listening/ Speaking, or Reading/Writing) and plan on returning to the ELI in Spring 2021. The test will be at the following times on December 4th for students who do not have:

  • Listening/Speaking 12:45pm
  • Grammar 1:30pm
  • Reading/Writing:  2:30pm

Please also contact Patricia if you have any questions.

Certificates:

Semester certificates and grade reports will be available in my.ELI by Monday, December 14th.  You will be able to find your certificate in your profile under “my profile” and “documents” in myELI.  Hard copies of certificates can be picked up in the ELI main office.  If you would like a friend or family member to pick up your certificate for you or you would like us to mail your certificate to a US mailing address, you should email Min at minsang921@ufl.edu.  If you need a hard copy of your certificate sent to you to an international address by FedEx you should email your name, exact mailing address, and phone number to StudyEnglish@eli.ufl.edu. You will also have to pay a $25 certificate shipping fee.

Non-returning Students:

If you are not returning to the ELI in the Spring, you will not be able to access your ufl.edu email address, one.uf.edu, Canvas, or other gatorlink services after January 13th.

Returning students:

All returning students must check in online using my.ELI between January 4 – 11. If you do not check in, you are not guaranteed a space in the class and you will have to pay a $100 Late Check in Fee.  Remember, if your plans have changed for the Spring, you should email Daryl at studyenglish@eli.ufl.edu to let him know.

Charges Due:

Every ELI student should log in to ONE.uf.edu and look at the “Campus Finances (Bursar)” tile to see if they owe any fees to the university. For example, you may need to pay for services you received at the Student Health Care Center or printing in a library. If you have a scholarship, it will not pay these charges.

Your I-20:

Make sure your I-20 does not expire on December 16th if you will study at the ELI after this Fall semester. Contact Daryl (StudyEnglish@eli.ufl.edu) if you need to extend your I-20. Also, if you are traveling with your ELI I-20, make sure your I-20 is not expired and that Daryl signed the travel authorization on page 2. Please contact Daryl if you want to make sure your I-20 is good for travel.

Financial guarantee for scholarship students:

Most financial guarantees expire by December 11th, 2020, which means that you will need to submit a new letter by the tuition deadline of January 20th  for the Spring C semester to avoid owing a late fee or missing classes. If you have any questions, please email Jennifer Vann at jvann@eli.ufl.edu.
