Notes from the Office

Class Attendance: Your attendance is very, very important.  Your teachers are taking note of both your absences and your tardies in every class every day.  Please remember that this also includes time spent in the hallway instead of the classroom.

Hallways:  Many UF faculty and staff have offices with doors in hallways on campus. So, please do not use the hallways as a gathering point.  Spend your time between classes outside the building.  If you are in the hallway entering or leaving class, please remember to speak softly so we do not disturb other classes or people trying to work.  Please do not block the hallways or staircases by sitting in them.

New Gator 1 IDs

UF has introduced a new, redesigned GatorONE ID card. Upgrading to the new card is not required, and your old Gator1 card will continue to work. But if you would like to get a new card, it is free this semester. Having a GatorONE card is important so you can ride RTS buses for free, check out books from the libraries at UF, and participate in free UF activities (Lake Wauburg, Gator Nights, some sporting events).

If you would like a new card, please visit the ELI Main Office to complete a request form. If you have any questions, talk to Christine.

Birthdays

The following are ELI Birthdays for the week of May 29-June 4:

Students:

June 1:  Fernando Tello Puerto

Staff:

None this week!

Have a very happy birthday!

Manners and Culture

Q:  Is it OK if I didn’t give a tip to the pizza delivery man despite the fact that I paid the delivery fee?

A:  No.  The delivery fee goes to the company whereas the tip goes to the driver. You should tip at least $2 per pizza to your driver.  For those of you using some of the other delivery services from restaurants these days, it’s customary to give your driver 15%.

Grammar

Q:  I ask, “Are you at the lab?” and my student replies, “Sure.” He means yes, or of course, but it doesn’t really make sense. I’ve had other students make this same mistake.  How do I explain the difference between ‘yes’ and ‘sure’?

A: “Sure” only means “yes” when you’re accepting an invitation or agreeing to or giving an opinion.  It doesn’t mean “yes” when it’s simple factual information.

Quote of the Week

I’d rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.
