Out and About: An Amazing Experience in Gainesville

by Kohei Ito, RW41

I had an amazing experience in Gainesville. One months ago, I was about to go to a friend’s house who lives in Cabana beach, and I took a Lyft. I arrived at Cabana beach and had a great time with my friends. When I was about to leave, I realized I didn’t have my wallet. Unfortunately , my wallet was not  in my friend’s house, so I thought it would be in Lyft on the way to Cabana beach. I cancelled all my credit cards in my wallet and contacted the Lyft driver, but she didn’t  answer to me. I was really worried about my wallet, because there were several credit cards, house keys, and cash in my wallet. One week later, I got the message from Lyft driver. She said she found a wallet in her car, but she was not in Gainesville at the time, so we decided to meet 3 days later. Finally I could meet her and I got my wallet!! That was really amazing thing but it’s not over yet. In my wallet were all credit cards, keys and cash. Nothing was taken. I really surprised because I didn’t expect that. I felt that was really an amazing event!! This experience made me realize that Gainesville is very nice city with a lot of kind and friendly people.

CIP Weekday Activities

Notes from the Office

Thanksgiving Holiday: November 22nd, 23rd, and 24th will be the Thanksgiving holiday. The ELI office will be closed and there will be no ELI classes on these days.

No Smoking on Campus: UF does not permit smoking on campus. This includes cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco (chew or dip). The ban on smoking means students cannot smoke in buildings, outdoor sitting areas, parking lots, garages, and on roadways.

Check your I20s: If your I-20 is expiring soon, make an appointment with Daryl in MAT 223 to renew your I-20 before it expires.

Financial Guarantees for Spring: If you have a government scholarship, be aware when your financial guarantee expires. For some students, the guarantee expires in December, and you will need to request a new one if you plan on studying in the Spring semester.  If you have any questions about when your financial guarantee expires, please email Iman Walford Vann at jvann@eli.ufl.edu.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to celebrate ELI faculty and staff who have reached a milestone in their time at the ELI this year.  This week, we’d like to give a shout out to everyone who has been at the ELI for more than 15 years, but fewer than 20 years:

Q: What is the meaning of the Thanksgiving Holiday? What do people in the US do on Thanksgiving?

A: Thanksgiving is a day to express our appreciation for all the people in our lives and all the things that we have to be thankful for. Thanksgiving is the universal family holiday in the US, as it doesn’t have specific ties to any one particular religion or belief system.

Here are some of the popular activities for Thanksgiving:

  • Eat a traditional meal with family and friends
  • Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade on TV
  • Take a nap
  • Watch football
  • Run in a race (often called a turkey trot)
  • Shop the Black Friday sales
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen

Grammar

A: The word advise is a verb and the pronunciation of the “s” is the z-sound. The word advice is a noun and the pronunciation of the “c” is the s-sound.
