Please join me in congratulating the nominees people who might win a scholarship for the ELI Scholarships to study in the Spring 2021 semester.

It is very difficult to be nominated for a scholarship. This means the nominees all worked extra hard this semester and achieved the following criteria goals :

  • Full-time C semester student
  • Academic Excellence: 4.0 GPA and high level of proficiency in at least three of the four skill areas
  • Outstanding Progress: outstanding progress in language skills
  • Excellent Attendance: no more than ten hours absences
  • Speak English: make every effort to speak English at all times
  • Successful Work Strategies: demonstrate personal initiative in and out of the classroom

Saturday November 14th– Cooking Tutorial (Zoom) – 4:00-6:00pm

Come learn to make a traditional American dish that is often served at a Thanksgiving Dinner – homemade Mac and Cheese! All you will need to make it is your favorite shredded cheese, milk, butter, flour, salt/pepper, and macaroni pasta! Feel free to watch and socialize while we cook if you choose not to cook, and be ready to share some traditional recipes from your country and how to make them so we can all learn!

Grammar

Q: What are the differences between recently and lately? I am always confused about these!

A: Recently and lately have similar meanings, and sometimes they can be interchanged, but with slight differences in meaning. Let’s compare:

  1. If an event was completely in the past (and you are using the simple past tense), and you want to indicate a time frame close to the present, then your only choice is recently:
  • I went to the bank recently.
  • I went to the bank lately.
  1. Both recently and lately can be used in the present perfect and present perfect progressive tenses to show a close time connection between the past and the present with a slight difference in meaning.
  • I have been very forgetful recently. (emphasizes one event in the indefinite past)
  • I have been very forgetful lately. (emphasizes a time period)
  1. When the meaning in the present perfect only indicates one event in the indefinite past, we can only use recently in affirmative sentences.
  • I have seen that movie recently.
  • I have eaten at Satchel’s Pizza recently.
  • I have seen that movie lately.
  • I have eaten at Satchel’s Pizza lately.

However, we can use both recently and lately in the negative sentences:

  • I haven’t eaten at Satchel’s Pizza recently. (emphasizes one event in the indefinite past)
  • I haven’t eaten at Satchel’s Pizza lately. (emphasizes a time period)

Notes from the Office

Veterans Day Holiday: Wednesday, November 11th, is Veterans Day, which is a holiday for the University of Florida. There will be no ELI classes and the office will be closed.

Thanksgiving Holiday: Thursday, November 26th is Thanksgiving. There will be no ELI classes and the ELI Main Office will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (Nov. 25-27). Please remember that classes will meet as normal on Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 23rd and 24th).

Student Voices: See your writing in print! Write a poem, a story, a paragraph, or an essay. All types of submissions are welcome. The deadline to submit to The ELI Student Voices has been extended to November 16th. Email your writing to clarklhr@ufl.edu. Please remember to include your class, name, and title for the piece.

Your I-20: Make sure your I-20 does not expire on December 16th if you will study at the ELI after this Fall semester. Contact Daryl (StudyEnglish@eli.ufl.edu) if you need to extend your I-20. Also, if you are traveling with your ELI I-20, make sure your I-20 is not expired and that Daryl signed the travel authorization on page 2. Please contact Daryl if you want to make sure your I-20 is good for travel.

Financial guarantee for scholarship students: Almost all of you have financial guarantees that expire by December 11th, 2020, which means that you will need to submit a new letter by the tuition deadline of January 20th for the Spring C semester to avoid owing a late fee or missing classes.
