Out and About

We have a new student submission this week from Sergio Rios:

I had the opportunity to travel to New York for four days with my family during the summer break. I recommend looking for a hotel close to Times Square, because it is so central that you can find many tourist places in this area by walking. It only took us 12 minutes to get Time Square. The crowded avenue is accompanied by street acrobatic theater, and it is cool to feel the special vibe in the air. There are different observation decks; one that is trending is called The Edge, which is located 20 minutes walking from Times Square. The new building has a big platform, and 360° view on the 100th floor with a “glass fence” and a part of the floor was made in glass to test the vertigo of the visitors. Downstairs, you find The Vessel, a unique building, bronze colored, with a structure that attracts attention, and is perfect for pictures. Central Park is gorgeous and enormous; one day is not enough to go around. The cost of riding the subway is $2.75, and it takes you in 20 minutes to the lower Manhattan. It is essential to visit the Brooklyn Bridge, Financial District, Wall Street, The Bull, and Ground Zero. Riding a boat to see the Statue of Liberty costs around $25 and is the landmark par excellence to visit in NYC. Little Island is a kind of a garden mounted over concrete trees on the banks of the Hudson River, with views toward Manhattan and New Jersey, amazing place for free. Do not miss a Broadway play, we enjoyed a musical called Chicago, and it was amazing. New York, a city to which you must come back again and again.

Reminders from the Office

Fines and Fees: Pay your library fines and your infirmary fees. If you’re not sure how to do this, Victoria has a handout (Matherly 225F) with instructions. Remember that if you fail to pay your fines and fees, you won’t receive your End of Term packet at Commencement.

Expiring I-20s: If your I-20 is expiring and you plan on returning to the ELI in the fall, you must talk to Daryl before the expiration date. It is in section 5 of the I-20.

Birthdays

There are no student birthdays this week.  HOWEVER, I goofed badly last week and forgot to put in the correct ones.  So, happy belated birthday to:

July 12:  Marcio Malta

July 12:  Khalid Alshammari

July 16:  Daniel Salas Rangel

Staff:

None this week

Happy Birthday!

Manners and Culture

Q:  Why don’t people at UF wear a lot of clothes during the winter?

A:  This is something unique to Florida. Florida’s winters are mild, and the periods of really cold weather only last a few days. One reason people may not wear a lot of clothes during Floridian winters is simply because they don’t HAVE any other clothes. They may figure that the cold days will be over soon, so why spend so much money on coats and boots? Still, some people enjoy wearing boots and shorts as a fashion statement.

Grammar

Q:  When do you use “neither” and “either” with a negative verb?

A:   Either is used when you give the negative verb in your answer. Neither is used when you don’t say a verb in your answer and you are agreeing with a negative verb.

Rafael: I don’t like hot weather.

Sasha: I don’t either.

Elizabeth: Me neither.

Q:  When do I use “so do I” and “so am I?”

A:  They both mean that you agree with the person talking but which one you use depends on the verb in the original sentence. Use “so am I” for the be verb. Use “so do I” for all other verbs. Look at the conversations that follow:

Joan: I am tired.

Selena: So am I.

Joan: I want to go to the movies.

Selena: So do I.
