Out and About: Farmers Markets and Florida Food

by Megan Forbes, ELI Director

In the September 26th edition of the ELI Weekly, editor Maya Shastri answered a question about good places to try food from Florida.  My favorite place to find Florida food is at a Farmers Market!  There are four different Farmers Markets in Gainesville, and many others in the surrounding area.  Each market has a different atmosphere and different farmers.  The ELI goes to the Market at Heartwood on some Thursdays.  If you want to listen to live music, this is a great option.  There is another nearby market called Grove Street Farmers Market open on Mondays.  Both the Heartwood and Grove Street are a little bit smaller than the two bigger markets but are close to Matherly Hall.  The largest market is the Alachua County Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.  This market is specifically for farmers, and you will often find farm trucks full of inexpensive local vegetables.  I go to the Haile Farmers Market on Saturdays because it is closest to my house. It also has a lot of organic produce and vegetables from many smaller farms near Gainesville. I think it is very cute, too.

These pictures are from the Haile Farmers Market.  I love the picture of the man selling boiled peanuts because it shows that even English speakers make punctuation mistakes! Can you spot it? You can find a complete list of farmers markets near Gainesville here: https://ask.aclib.us/faq/67821.  If you cannot make it to a farmers market, you can also find many local fruits, vegetables, and meat at Ward’s Supermarket on NW 6th street.  You can find a list of many of the local vegetables and fruits that are in markets right now on the farmers’ social media pages or websites. Right now, many types of greens, turnips, radishes, pumpkins, and persimmons are at the markets. Give them a try!

PS Both “Farmers’ Market” and “Farmers Market” are correct.  “Farmer’s Market” is only correct if the market belongs to only one farmer.

Notes from the Office

Thanksgiving Holiday: There are no classes on November 23rd, 24th, and 25th for the Thanksgiving holiday. The ELI office will be closed.

Check your I20s: If your I-20 is expiring soon, make an appointment with Daryl in MAT 223 to renew your I-20 before it expires.

Financial Guarantees for Spring: Dear scholarship students, we hope to see you again in the Spring! Therefore, we have sent you an early reminder to request your new financial guarantee letter for the Spring semester, if you plan to return. Most of your financial guarantees will expire this December, which means that you will need to submit a new financial guarantee by the tuition deadline of January 26th for the Spring C semester to avoid owing a late fee. If you need an enrollment letter or if you have any questions, please email Jennifer Vann at jvann@eli.ufl.edu.

Student Voices: Don’t forget to send your original writing to Student Voices so that the ELI can celebrate your writing. You can submit any of your work that you wish to see published. It can be from any class or something you have written on your own, but ask your teachers for help editing! You can email it to Olga Moody (omoody@ufl.edu)  or to your teacher. Please include your name and class on your submission. The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 18th.
