Pictures for the Slideshow

Do you have good pictures of the activities, classes, or fun things you have done around Florida with your ELI friends?  Send them to Tate by email or Whatsapp so she can feature some of them in the slideshow at commencement!  (tquinones@eli.ufl.edu)

Reminders from the Office

Charges Due: Every ELI student should log in to ONE.uf.edu  (opens in new tab) and look at the “Campus Finances (Bursar)” tile to see if they owe any fees to the university. For example, you may need to pay for services you received at the Student Health Care Center or printing in a library. If you have a scholarship, it will not pay these charges.

Expiring I-20s: If your I-20 is expiring and you plan on returning to the ELI in the fall, you must talk to Daryl before the expiration date. It is in section 5 of the I-20.

Apartment Leases: As the semester draws to a close, keep in mind that your lease might be ending soon. In the Summer, many student leases end on July31st. It is important to know the exact date that your apartment lease ends so you can make plans. If you’re not sure when it ends, ask your apartment office.

If you need help finding a place to stay in short-term (like a hotel or AirBNB), someone to take over your lease, or a new apartment, talk to Christine in Matherly 223.

Celebrate Your Success!  Were you admitted to a degree program for the fall semester? For example, will you be attending Santa Fe College, starting your PhD at UF, or starting a bachelor’s degree at another university?  If you would like your classmates and the ELI to be able to congratulate you, send an email to studyenglish@eli.ufl.edu with the acceptance notification of the universities or colleges you have been admitted to for the fall. Please send this information before Wednesday, August 9th. We will print your name and new program in an upcoming Weekly!

People out:  Daryl will be out of the office from 7/26 to 8/2.

Iman will be out on 7/27.

Patricia will be out 7/28 and 7/31.

Birthdays

I goofed badly last week and looked at the wrong chart.  So, happy belated birthday to:

July 18:  Isaac Cisneros Sanchez

July 21:  Vito Camporeale

This week:

July 27:  Rakan Aljuaid

Staff:

July 29:  Todd Allen (I’M TURNING 60!)

July 31:  Patricia Moon (putting it in early, as she’s taking a well-deserved day off!)

Happy Birthday!

Manners and Culture

Q:  Why don’t people at UF wear a lot of clothes during the winter?

A:  This is something unique to Florida. Florida’s winters are mild, and the periods of really cold weather only last a few days. One reason people may not wear a lot of clothes during Floridian winters is simply because they don’t HAVE any other clothes. They may figure that the cold days will be over soon, so why spend so much money on coats and boots? Still, some people enjoy wearing boots and shorts as a fashion statement.

Grammar

Q:  When do you use “neither” and “either” with a negative verb?

A:   Either is used when you give the negative verb in your answer. Neither is used when you don’t say a verb in your answer and you are agreeing with a negative verb.

Rafael: I don’t like hot weather.

Sasha: I don’t either.

Elizabeth: Me neither.

Q:  When do I use “so do I” and “so am I?”

A:  They both mean that you agree with the person talking but which one you use depends on the verb in the original sentence. Use “so am I” for the be verb. Use “so do I” for all other verbs. Look at the conversations that follow:

Joan: I am tired.

Selena: So am I.

Joan: I want to go to the movies.

Selena: So do I.
