Welcome to the English Language Institute (ELI)

The University of Florida English Language Institute offers intensive English programs that prepare students for using English in the real world. Our methods of instruction are based on current research in the fields of language teaching, acquisition, learning and assessment, and the more than 60 years of experience we have had teaching English to international students at the University of Florida. Our faculty and staff are committed to excellence in providing quality service and education. We offer English instruction that prepares you for using English in an academic or professional context as well as the culture that is all around you.

The ELI Office in 223 Matherly Hall is open for document drop-off and pick-up only between 10:30am and 3:30pm Monday through Friday. 

All students, faculty and staff must complete UF COVID-19 online screening:  https://uf.tfaforms.net/440 and be cleared before coming to campus. 

Spring 2021: January 11th – April 23rd

In Spring 2021, all class hours (23 per week) will be offered in-person.  All students intending to study in person must complete an online COVID-19 screening and be cleared to come to campus prior to starting classes.

Online sections of classes may be available, depending on new regulations from the US government. The UF ELI will follow all national, state, local and UF guidance during the Coronavirus pandemic and reserves the right to change course delivery mode based upon this guidance, while meeting US government requirements for F-1 students.

STEP Online Fall B 2020, October 26 – December 11

To register for classes: Please send a copy or photo of your passport or government-issued identification and a copy of proof of completion of secondary school to StudyEnglish@eli.ufl.edu. Click here to register and pay the course fee online (opens a new window).  After registration, you will receive a letter of acceptance, access to the STEP Online Student Guide, and information on how to access the class.
