The ELI Weekly
UF Libraries
What do you know about the UF Library System? Did you know it is the largest information system in Florida? Did you know there are seven libraries on campus? Did you know that your student ID is your library card to check out materials?
Here is a link for a library guide that was written by students, for students! The guide provides a wealth of information on what the Libraries have to offer so you can get the most out of your visits. You will also find an insider scoop about what is unique about each of the branches on campus, including the Architecture & Fine Arts Library, the Education Library, the Health Science Center Libraries, Library West, Marston Science Library, and Smathers Library.
The Libraries have something for every student! Watch a video from the library to help you learn about the services and resources available to you.

CIP Reminders
CIP Passports: Don’t forget to get your CIP Passport Stickers from the activity leaders AT the event (not after). Remember the CIP Pineapple is hidden in a new place every Monday in the CIP office. Stop by and find it!
Conversation Partners: Want to make a friend and speak English? Sign up for a conversation partner! Wait two weeks to be paired and then meet your new partner for one hour a week to practice conversation and make a friend! If you are a returner and still want a CP, you should still sign up here, even if you had a partner last semester.
Sign up for a CP here!: https://forms.gle/h5NyWTrkpE331zzS7
Remember, if you sign up, you must meet your partner at least once a week and respond to their messages. Email conversationpartners@eli.ufl.edu if you have any questions or problems.
Notes from the Office
Teacher Workday: Monday, September 26, is a teacher workday. There will be no classes on this day so that your instructors can prepare new lessons for you. Even though there are no classes, the ELI office will be open.
Florida Weather: Florida storms can be very powerful. What do you do if you need to walk across campus and there is lightning and thunder? You should wait in a safe place, and if possible, let your teacher know you are waiting for the storm to pass. Sometimes, UF will cancel classes for a hurricane. The Gator Safe App can keep you up-to-date on the Florida weather and UF information about cancellations.
New ELI Scholarship Criteria: The criteria for the ELI scholarship have been updated. We now have a list of minimum requirements and some new requirements, like successful academic work strategies and intercultural understanding/relationships. If you are interested in a scholarship, please review the updated criteria and the selection process (https://eli.ufl.edu/application-information/scholarship/).
Test (TOEFL/IELTS) Preparation Class: Let us know if you are interested in taking a test preparation class! If enough students are interested, we can have a test preparation class in Fall B. Please take the survey to let us know:
https://ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0JHNXBQKGPr3ftY The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, September 30th.

Grammar
Q: What’s the difference between speak and talk? Can I say “I talk English”?
A: There are two main differences. The first is the formality. Speak is more
academic than talk. Look at the two examples below. Which one would you
use with your friend and which one would you use with your professor?
• Could I speak with you?
• Let’s talk.
The other difference is that talk can’t have a direct object but speak can. This means your sentence is incorrect. They can both take indirect objects using with.
• Correct: I speak English.
• Incorrect: I talk English.
• Correct: I spoke with my professor.
• Correct: I talked with my
professor.
Manners & Culture
Q: I’m homesick and sad. I don’t know what to do to feel better.
A: Don’t worry! This is natural when you move to another country. The best thing you can do is to keep active: participate in class, go to the CIP activities, and chat with friends. You can also talk to someone about how you feel. New students are going through the same thing and probably need your support, too. Returning students went through the same thing in their first semester and will have good advice for you.
Your teachers and Language Assistants are also there for you. The person who talks most, adjusts the best. Make local connections, with your own culture and the host culture. Did you know that UF has many student organizations including international student organizations?
There is also an organization on campus that helps international gators with things like culture shock. You can see more about this resource here: https://counseling.ufl.edu/outreach/international/
