B terms: Short (7- or 8-week) B terms are intended for casual learners, professionals, students with full admission to the university, or as preparation for a long semester. It is not possible to exit the ELI or receive a UF English proficiency test waiver in a short semester.
Application deadline: This date gives most applicants sufficient time to obtain a visa. The ELI reserves the right to close a term to applications at any time based on projected enrollment.
Tuition: Only tuition is payable to the ELI. Other payments will be made to apartment complexes or the bookstore. Get Gainesville housing information here.
Explanation of Dates and Fees
- Terms: Long (13-15 week) C terms are designed to match the academic calendar of degree-seeking students as much as possible. However, enrolled graduate students MUST follow the academic dates provided to them by their departments. Short (7- or 8-week) B terms are intended for casual learners, professionals, students with full admission to the university, or as preparation for a long semester. It is not possible to exit the ELI or receive a UF English proficiency test waiver in a short semester.
- Check-In and Placement Testing: All students are required to report to the ELI on the published check-in date. All students are required to take a placement test on the published date. All students are required to begin attending classes on the published date. A $100 late arrival fee is charged to new and returning students who miss the check-in session without notifying the ELI in advance, or who check-in but do not attend the first week of classes. Students who check-in but do not attend the first day of classes may be dropped from the program.
- Tuition: Tuition must be paid by the end of the third day of classes. Tuition includes full-time enrollment of 23 hours per week: 10 hours of Reading/Writing, 8 hours of Listening/Speaking, 5 hours of Grammar. Tuition does not include possible additional electives such as pronunciation, IELTS or TOEFL prep, advanced vocabulary, or other Special Program courses offered. Tuition also includes participation in the cultural immersion program and the services described below in “student support.” Part-time enrollment is not permitted on a student (F-1) visa.
- Housing: This is the estimated cost of rent for a student apartment. More details about housing in Gainesville can be found on our Housing Information page. A student apartment includes a private bedroom and bathroom, but a shared kitchen and living area. Rent usually includes electricity and water. This amount does not include nonrefundable application fees ($50-100 average) or refundable security deposits ($750 average). Family or private housing is also available at a higher cost. Payment for housing is made directly to the student apartment complex, not to the University of Florida or the ELI.
- Estimated Insurance, Books, Food, and Personal Expenses: The University of Florida requires students to carry medical insurance. The cost of medical insurance varies in price from term to term depending on such factors as length of study, age, and marital status. Medical insurance for a single student is $258 per month. Students who can provide proof of medical insurance matching the Florida requirements are not required to purchase additional insurance. The cost of books changes depending upon a student’s levels, but averages about $300 per term. Estimated food costs are based on students preparing food in their apartments. On-campus meal plans are available at a higher cost. Payments for insurance, books, food, and personal expenses are made directly to the providers, not to the University of Florida or the ELI.
- Total Estimated Costs per Term: These are the total estimated costs for the complete term of study. Students without outside support or scholarships must show proof of this amount in order to be eligible for a student visa.
- Technology Requirements: All students must have access to a desktop or laptop with a webcam and reliable internet service. Specific information on UF technology requirements and support will be sent with semester-specific student admission packets. More information can also be found here.
