Summer B: June 29 – August 6, 2020

Listening/Speaking: In the STEP Online listening/speaking class, students will improve both listening comprehension and speaking skills. Students will work on academic functional language in the form of presentations and discussion as well as pronunciation and conversational strategies in U.S. culture. This class meets for two synchronous class hours per week, with an additional 3 hours of instruction per week provided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor, group work, and online assignments.

Reading/Writing: In the STEP Online reading/writing class, students learn to read and write more effectively. Class work will help them increase their reading speed and their understanding of what they read. They will study techniques such as scanning, skimming, finding the main ideas, and making inferences. They will practice writing good sentences, paragraphs and essays; in addition, they will learn ways to plan, organize, revise and edit their writing. This class meets for two synchronous class hours per week, with an additional 3 hours of instruction per week provided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor, group work, and online assignments.

English Grammar in Context: In the STEP Online grammar class, students will be able to learn more about grammar structures and rules as they are used in both written and spoken language. The class will read American English texts and listen to both formal and informal examples to review some of the most difficult grammar areas, including verb tenses, articles, and prepositions. This class meets for two synchronous class hours per week, with an additional 3 hours of instruction per week provided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor, group work, and online assignments.

English for US Academic Culture: In the STEP Online English for US Academic Culture class, students will get a head start before beginning academic studies in the US.  Students will learn about academic expectations, online learning platforms commonly used in the US, classroom norms and expectations, and resources to help them once they begin their academic studies.   Students will have a chance to meet virtually with current University of Florida students to talk about the experience of studying at a US university. This class meets for two synchronous class hours per week, with an additional 3 hours of instruction per week provided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor, group work, and online assignments.

Professional Communication: In the STEP Online Professional Communication class, students will learn the language and culture necessary for career success working with companies based in the US.  Topics covered will include professional presentations, email and other written correspondence, negotiating in English, online meeting etiquette, networking tips, and professional expectations in the US. This class meets for two synchronous class hours per week, with an additional 3 hours of instruction per week provided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor, group work, and online assignments.
